PRIVATE LESSON INFORMATION

I am extremely excited to be offering Private Voice Lessons through Ashbury Music Hall.  I believe everyone CAN sing and should have the opportunity to explore and improve their singing voice.  While I am a trained opera singer, I teach EVERY style of singing - and I'm good at it. The fundamentals of how the voice functions are the same, no matter what style you may sing.  I will help you to understand how to get the best out of your voice and sing with a healthy, free production so you can sing for a lifetime (or even a long concert) without losing your voice.

Each week, you will have online exercises to complete & submit to me via the Lesson Forum, as well as one 1/2 hr weekly one-on-one session with me via Skype.  I request that you complete the online exercises BEFORE our Skype lesson, so I can give you feedback and get you started.  During your Skype lesson, we will also work specifically on music that YOU would like to improve on, as well as address any questions you may have about the exercises that were not answered through the Lesson Forum.  When you sign up for the full course, at the end of week 7 and at the end of week 10, you will receive a bonus lesson.    You will be expected to complete one lesson per week and complete the course in 10 weeks, as I am setting aside specific time for your private Skype lesson, just as I do for my students who come to my studio.

For the full course, you receive two bonus lessons (with feedback from me) and a regularly scheduled weekly 1/2-hour Skype "lesson time."  This is a $605 value.

You have the option of purchasing lessons on a week-by-week basis.  The cost for this is $55/week.  You will NOT have a regularly scheduled lesson time - I will book your Skype lesson according to availability at a mutually convenient time.  This option is if you cannot commit the time/money to a weekly lesson.  I want you to be able to take lessons and so have worked with Ashbury Music Hall to offer these options.  If you need to take lessons every other week, or even less frequently, this is the option for you.  Please note, you will NOT receive the bonus lessons at the end of weeks 7 & 10.

Whichever option you choose, each lesson will be tailored to YOU and your vocal needs.  Once you sign up, you will receive a PERSONALIZED course of study just for you.  Everyone progresses at a different rate, and I do not believe in a "one size fits all" approach to singing.  This lessons are for YOU and improving your vocal knowledge and ability, whether you sing with me for 1 lesson or 100 lessons.  I look forward to singing with you!

Rachel

Helpful Materials:

A Keyboard or a Pitch Pipe for finding accurate pitch.  A metronome to keep steady time.  Access to a mirror so that you can see yourself as you sing (you can pick up a small hand mirror at the dollar store - I have one on the wall as well as a hand mirror that I use).  See the links below for recommended products.

Recommended Pitch Pipes:

Kratt Master Key Pitch Pipe - F-F or C-C.

The iPhone also has metronome and pitch-pipe apps available.  There are apps available for other smart phones, if you search them out.

Recommended Keyboards:

I LOVE the Casio series of keyboards.  I also have a portable roll-up piano that is amazingly portable & has traveled to Europe with me.

Recommended Metronomes:

My Kratt MT-50 metronome is reliable and has a LOUD click so that I can always hear it while singing (the digital beeps of many metronomes are very hard to hear when singing).  I also put in a link for a free online metronome that you can use.

I have been teaching private voice lessons since 1993. I came to Arizona State University because of a graduate teaching assistantship in voice - teaching voice lessons to music majors for college credit. I am an internationally known singer and continue both performing and increasing my knowledge of the voice. I have an annual 20%-25% success rate with my high school students at the Regional Honor Choir auditions. 20% of those then audition successfully for the Arizona All-State Choir. As a member of NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing), my students sing annually at the NATS Student Auditions and the NATS Music Theater Student Auditions. I grew up attending the Indiana University Children's Choir, the Indiana University Young Pianists program, and the Indiana Univerisity Young Dancer's Ballet Program. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree with a music major from Smith College. I have two Master of Music degrees from Arizona State University - one in Vocal Performance, and one in Vocal Pedagogy (the science of teaching the voice). I continue to study, perform, practice, and improve both my own voice and my teaching skills. My students are able to compile a personal “toolbox” of vocalizes and techniques that enable them to practice specifically and successfully on their own. Each student becomes aware of his/her own voice and is able to allow it to be free and develop into the instrument that it was made to be. Through practice, listening to their lesson, attention to detail, and individual guidance, my students realize their vocal abilities.
