Purchasing a Recorder
There are actually nine types of recorders varying in length from the tiny sopranino to the large double contra bass, each having it's own distinctive low or high range. The most popular is probably the "Descant," or Soprano, mainly because it's less expensive and it's easy to carry around. You can start your lessons, however, with any type of recorder.
Recorders can be very inexpensive compared to other instruments. You can find them at your local music store, amazon.com, and many other places. Here are some considerations when purchasing:
- Recorder Size/Kind: The longer recorders demand larger hands and fingers. Soprano recorder is comfortable for most everyone.
- Materials (Wood vs. Plastic): There are advantages to both and both kinds play well. Plastic ones are less expensive and easier to replace. For wooden recorders, the harder woods are better, i.e. boxwood or rosewood. Softer woods, such as maple or pearwood are okay for beginners.
